People who test come from various backgrounds, sometimes with surprising prior careers and interests. People who test are not simply "testers." Some testers may find that the tools they use do not adequately support them. What are we going to do about it? Isabel Evans is researching testers' experiences with tools and automation, and as part of her research, she discovered some surprising contributing factors to testers' experiences with their tools. Isabel's findings from research conducted between 2017 and Summer 2022 provide insights into who is testing, how they are testing, and their perspectives on the required tools.
Isabel discusses why usability can be an illusion, what it is like to be stuck in limbo, and the mixture of frustration and pride felt by testers. She discusses her current and future research, with her plans for the end of 2025, and how research could contribute to improving testers' experiences of tools in the future.
After over 30 years in IT on software industry projects, quality and testing practitioner Isabel Evans is now a part-time post-graduate student at the University of Malta. Her research focuses on human factors in test automation. Her interest in this topic arose from real-life experiences as a test manager, quality manager, and test consultant.
Isabel authored Achieving Software Quality Through Teamwork and chapters in Agile Testing: How to Succeed in an eXtreme Testing Environment, The Testing Practitioner, and Foundations of Software Testing. A popular speaker and story-teller at software conferences worldwide.
Isabel has chaired EuroSTAR (2019) and HUSTEF (2018) and presented tutorials and keynotes at conferences worldwide. She is a Chartered IT Professional and Fellow of the British Computer Society and received the 2017 EuroSTAR Testing Excellence Award.
