A Health Check on your Teams - Are They Really Healthy?

About the Talk

Mostly, at many organisations, the average tenure of a QA engineer/tester is only a couple of years. Testers are helping to solve different, interesting problems, but a lot of the time, they take that knowledge with them when they leave. Organisations commonly promote this hero culture where X champions certain things and always gets rewarded. Rather than figuring out how to distil X's knowledge throughout the rest of our team, we keep promoting X. What happens when X eventually burns out and leaves with the amount of pressure this responsibility gives?

It's horrible to have human silos that cause fall overs if we build teams like that. True magic happens when these islands of knowledge are intertwined by figuring out what X is good at and how to generate cognitive questions or disrupt the siloed expertise within teams. Ideally, building a healthy team happens only by removing this hero worship. Ensuring the team's health requires looking at the people behind the applications we build. Many software projects flounder because of the lack of information and 'social' bandwidth. Social bandwidth refers to the social interactions between members of the team. Good social bandwidth requires a very high information bandwidth. Software development is a participatory culture where developers, testers, product owners, and stakeholders collaborate to develop software while continuously learning from one another and creating knowledge.

So, what do we need as a team to function well and build a Culture of Quality? How do you ensure your team is healthy? As we know, healthy teams are high-performing teams; how could you focus on providing that safe participatory culture? This talk will shed some insights on building healthy teams with a culture of resilience.
