Vision-first Test Automation - What, Why, How, & Lessons Learned

About the Talk

There are several ways to automate a smartphone. This talk will explore a 'top down' approach using cameras, open source computer vision libraries, and USB mouse and keyboard protocols to implement a 'vision-first' approach to mobile automation. The talk will go into detail on why this approach is sometimes necessary (mainly when no other automation method is available), and how it could be compatible with Appium for end-to-end automation of real devices. The talk will explain how this approach was implemented on several projects, what are the pros and cons, and lessons learned.

Key Takeaways:

  • What is vision-first testing
  • Why a vision-first approach to automation is sometimes necessary
  • Open-source tools used in vision-first
  • Pros and cons to using this approach
