What is System Integration Testing?

System Integration Testing (SIT) is a software testing method that verifies that all system components are integrated and work together as expected. SIT testing typically takes place after unit testing and before acceptance testing. It can include testing of interfaces, data flow, and business processes. The goal is to ensure that all the individual components of the system have been integrated correctly and that the system functions as a whole as intended.

Salient Characteristics of System Integration Testing:

  • Aim: To verify the interaction between integrated modules and the functionality of those modules, ensuring no loss of data or discontinuity in communication across components.
  • Scope: Encompasses testing of software modules, hardware aspects, data stores, or a system that has human input (HITL).
  • Procedure: The first testing on modules is complete in isolation, then the modules are progressively merged until the system is created for testing in totality.

Importance:

SIT is crucial for:

  • Detecting issues in module interactions early.
  • Ensuring compliance with specified requirements.
  • Validating data flow and dependencies across modules.
