What is Chromium?

Chromium is more than just the name of a browser; it's also the open-source project that Chrome and other browsers use. Although it took Google several years to do so, the search giant finally released its Chrome browser as open source in September 2008, kick-starting the Chromium project. Users had the advantage of modifying and improving Chromium by adding features, fixing feature bugs, and providing feedback to developers.

Chromium is a subset of Chrome and Edge since Google and Microsoft add different components to the former to make their products. All components in Chromium are also in Chrome and Edge, but not all components in Chrome or Edge are in Chromium.

It has a huge community of developers who work with each other to keep the browser current and strong. This means that every new version of the Chromium browser makes the primary version stronger. These updates can be passed between forks, resulting in faster and better non-browser projects.

Chromium allows engineers to build new browsers faster, which increases diversity. Google Chrome is only one of several browsers built on Chromium; other examples include Opera, Amazon Silk, and Microsoft Edge. Edge replaced Microsoft’s JavaScript engines with Chromium’s V8 and Blink rendering engines.
