How to set up a proxy server on your LAN?

Windows 10 automatically detects the proxy setting and configures it by default. However, we can also configure the settings manually. The primary way to set up a proxy server is to use a script provided by your organization's network administrator. We can also set an automatic configuration script. Let's see how we can set up a proxy server in Windows and browsers.

For Chrome:

  • Open your Chrome browser.
  • Navigate to the three dots in the top-right corner.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Settings. You will be presented with the Chrome settings page.
  • Scroll down the settings page and click on Advanced Options.
  • Scroll further and click on the option Open Your Computer's Proxy Settings. This option will be under the System section.
  • Upon clicking this option, you will be presented with an Internet Properties dialog box.
  • In this dialog box, head over to the Connections tab.
  • Click on the LAN Setting option.
  • Select the Use a proxy server for your LAN option displayed under the Proxy Server section.
  • Enter the Address and the Port of your preferred proxy server.
  • Click OK to save, and you are good to go!

For Microsoft Edge:

  • Open your Microsoft Edge browser.
  • Navigate to the three dots in the top-right corner.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Settings. You will be presented with the Chrome settings page.
  • Select the System option from the left sidebar.
  • Click on the option Open Your Computer's Proxy Settings.

For Firefox:

  • Open your Firefox browser.
  • Navigate to the three dots in the top-right corner.
  • From the drop-down menu, select Settings. You will be presented with the Firefox settings page.
  • Scroll down and click on the option Network Settings. Then click on the Settings button.
  • Upon clicking this option, you will be presented with the Connection Settings dialog box.
  • In this dialog box, you will come across multiple options for configuring proxy access to the internet. They are as follows:
    • No Proxy: On selecting this option, no proxy is set up.
    • Auto-detect proxy settings for this network: This option auto-detects proxy settings for the network you are currently using.
    • Use system proxy settings: This option uses the proxy settings of your operating system.
    • Manual proxy configuration: By selecting this option and providing HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Proxy, and the corresponding Port, we can manually set up our proxy configurations.
For this instance, we will select the auto-detect proxy settings for this network option
  • Click OK to save, and you are good to go!
