How to use shouldPrintVerificationInOrderErrorAndShowBothWantedAndPrevious method of org.mockitousage.verification.BasicVerificationInOrderTest class

You could do this by using an Answer to increment a counter if any of the methods are called.

Note that you need to stub all methods. A method's uniqueness is based on its signature and not just the method name. Two methods with the same name are still two different methods.

doAnswer(incrementCounter).when(mockObj.method1(anyString()));
doAnswer(incrementCounter).when(mockObj.method1(anyString(), anyString()));
doAnswer(incrementCounter).when(mockObj.method2(anyString()));

Make sure you have the following dependency in your pom file

Use MockitoAnnotations.initMocks to initiate the @Mock and @InjectMocks objects. Your test would look something like:

@Mock
FastPowering fastPower;

@InjectMocks
Controller controller;

@Before
public void setup() {
    MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this);
}

@Test
public void test() {
    ....
}

By annotating the BImpl field with @Mock, you're saying that the instance itself should be a mock. However, you're not telling Mockito what result the mock should give when invoked with arguments, so Mockito uses its default behaviour of returning null.

The fact that BImpl is a real class with real behaviour is irrelevant. The field does not contain an instance of that class; it contains an instance of a mock.

In your test method, before you call aImpl.doSomething(), tell mockito the behaviour you expect it to use:

when(bImpl.permuteString("test")).thenReturn("someOtherValue");

Mockito 1.8.1 introduced anyVararg() matcher:

when(a.b(anyInt(), anyInt(), Matchers.<String>anyVararg())).thenReturn(b);

Edit new syntax after deprecation:

when(a.b(anyInt(), anyInt(), ArgumentMatchers.<String>any())).thenReturn(b);

I had this issue and my problem was that I was calling my method with any() instead of anyInt(). So I had:

doAnswer(...).with(myMockObject).thisFuncTakesAnInt(any())

and I had to change it to:

doAnswer(...).with(myMockObject).thisFuncTakesAnInt(anyInt())

I have no idea why that produced a NullPointerException. Maybe this will help the next poor soul.

Try Cntrl + Shift + T on your eclipse screen. Check what are your results. Ideally eclipse should resolve this class only from one dependency. If you are getting multiple results, you may need to add exclusion on certain dependencies.

Also check if you are able to execute your test cases from command prompt. If you are able to do it, then it's not a maven problem. But if something is failing here, check your dependencies.

You need to provide a way of accessing the member variables so you can pass in a mock (the most common ways would be a setter method or a constructor which takes a parameter).

If your code doesn't provide a way of doing this, it's incorrectly factored for TDD (Test Driven Development).

Mocking of final classes and methods is an incubating, opt-in feature. It uses a combination of Java agent instrumentation and subclassing in order to enable mockability of these types. As this works differently to our current mechanism and this one has different limitations and as we want to gather experience and user feedback, this feature had to be explicitly activated to be available ; it can be done via the mockito extension mechanism by creating the file src/test/resources/mockito-extensions/org.mockito.plugins.MockMaker containing a single line:

After you created this file, Mockito will automatically use this new engine and one can do :
