How to use shouldAppendQuotingForString method of org.mockito.internal.matchers.MatchersToStringTest class

This feature is builtin since Mockito 1.9.5. Just use

mock(ClassToMock.class, withSettings().verboseLogging())

The sample works if you remove the PowerMock dependencies. The issue is that the versions of Mockito and PowerMock used are incompatible with each other. For PowerMock 2.x you need at least Mockito 2.8.9+. PowerMock provides a compatibility list that shows what version of PowerMock is compatible with what version of Mockito. Fix up the versions to be compatible with each other and your sample will start to work.

I need to replace dependency for javaee-api with javax.selvlet-api as below:

There is more than one possible argument matcher and one is eq, which is mentioned in the exception message. Use:

verify(function, times(1)).doSomething(eq(arg1), any(Argument2.class));

(static imports supposed to be there -- eq() is Matchers.eq()).

You also have same() (which does reference equality, ie ==), and more generally you can write your own matchers.

(I assume you can use Mockito though) Nothing dedicated comes to my mind but I tend to use the following strategy when it comes to situations like that:

1) In the class under test, replace the static direct call with a call to a package level method that wraps the static call itself:

2) Spy the class under test while testing and mock the wrapped package level method:

It appears Mockito uses an algorithm described in their JavaDoc

If I understand correctly, it will first sort on type (in this case only 1 B) and then sort on name (no changes here). It will finally inject using the OngoingInjector interface implementation, which appears to search for the first field and inject it.

Since you only have 1 B defined and there are 2 fields of B in the Mock, it will see the match of the first instance to the field and stop. This is because mocks.size() == 1 in NameBasedCandidateFilter . Therefore it will stop filtering and inject it directly. If you create multiple mocks of the same type, they will get sorted on Name and injected accordingly.

I was able to get it work when I created multiple mocks (but less than the number of fields) of a specific type.

This will correctly inject b2 into a.b2 and b3 into a.b3 instead of a.b1 and a.b2 (the first 2 fields that are defined in A).

You can always leave a GitHub issue on their repository with an enhancement or change on the injection filtering algorithm in order to be looked at.

Mocking of final classes and methods is an incubating, opt-in feature. It uses a combination of Java agent instrumentation and subclassing in order to enable mockability of these types. As this works differently to our current mechanism and this one has different limitations and as we want to gather experience and user feedback, this feature had to be explicitly activated to be available ; it can be done via the mockito extension mechanism by creating the file src/test/resources/mockito-extensions/org.mockito.plugins.MockMaker containing a single line:

After you created this file, Mockito will automatically use this new engine and one can do :

My working structure now looks like this.

Mockito comes with a helper class to save you some reflection boiler plate code:

Update: Unfortunately the mockito team decided to remove the class in Mockito 2. So you are back to writing your own reflection boilerplate code, use another library (e.g. Apache Commons Lang), or simply pilfer the Whitebox class (it is MIT licensed).

Update 2: JUnit 5 comes with its own ReflectionSupport and AnnotationSupport classes that might be useful and save you from pulling in yet another library.

You could also Stub Consecutive Calls (#10 in 2.8.9 api). In this case, you would use multiple thenReturn calls or one thenReturn call with multiple parameters (varargs).
