How to use should_not_equal_if_number_of_arguments_differ method of org.mockito.internal.invocation.InvocationsFinderTest class

You can achieve that with thenAnswer(), a feature Mockito documentation sees as controversial:

Yet another controversial feature which was not included in Mockito originally. We recommend using simple stubbing with toReturn() or toThrow() only. Those two should be just enough to test/test-drive any clean & simple code.

Here's thenAnswer:

As you pointed out, it is not possible to mock static methods with Mockito and since you do not wanna use Powermock or other tools, you can try something as follows in your tests.

1. Create test authentication object

   Authentication auth = new ... // create instance based on your needs and with required attributes or just mock it if you do not care

2. Mock security context

   SecurityContext context = mock(SecurityContext.class);

3. Ensure your mock returns the respective authentication

   when(context.getAuthentication()).thenReturn(auth);

4. Set security context into holder

   SecurityContextHolder.setContext(securityContext);

Now every call to SecurityContextHolder.getContext().getAuthentication() should return authentication object created in step 1.

Provided you are using Mockito version 1.9.0 or later, the best way to achieve what you want is like this:

First thing is the @RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class) declaration which will cause @Mock and @InjectMocks annotation to work automatically without any explicit initialization. The second thing is that starting with Mockito 1.9.0 @InjectMocks annotation can use the Constructor injection mechanism which is the best option for your Service class.

Other options for @InjectMocks are Setter injection and Field injection (see docs BTW) but you'd need a no argument constructor to use them.

So summarizing - your code cannot work because:

• you are not using the MockitoJUnitRunner nor MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this) so @Mock annotation takes no effect
• even if above were satisfied your example would fail because mockProxy would be initialized after the test is constructed and your service is tried to be initialized during the test class construction, hence it receives null mockProxy reference.

If for some reason you don't want to use @InjectMocks, the only way is to construct your Service object within the test method body or within the @Before annotated setUp method.

@Mock creates a mock. @InjectMocks creates an instance of the class and injects the mocks that are created with the @Mock (or @Spy) annotations into this instance.

Note you must use @RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class) or Mockito.initMocks(this) to initialize these mocks and inject them (JUnit 4).

With JUnit 5, you must use @ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class).

New feature added to Mockito makes this even easier,

In case when there are more than one parameters, and capturing of only single param is desired, use other ArgumentMatchers to wrap the rest of the arguments:

verify(mock).doSomething(eq(someValue), eq(someOtherValue), argument.capture());
assertEquals("John", argument.getValue().getName());

You can mock without usage of the PowerMock it but in a slightly more complicated way:

keyStoreMock.load(null);  // this is important to put the internal state "initialized" to true

From now you just mock keyStoreSpiMock, for example:

when(keyStoreSpiMock.engineGetKey(any(), any())).thenReturn(mock(Key.class);

The method you are mocking is not accessible to the Mockito code.

Because your test code and your code under test are in the same package, the compiler lets you set up your mock that way, but at runtime, the Mockito library has to try to access moveAttachment, but it's not working in your case. This appears to be a bug or known limitation in Mockito as it should support that case, (and in fact, does support it in most cases).

The easiest thing to do would be to make moveAttachment a public method. If that is not an option, then first question whether you want to even mock it. What happens if the real method gets called?

The last option is to use PowerMock to treat the moveAttachment method as a private method and mock it that way.

Mocking the iterator works for me. See below code sample:

This is indeed a limitation of Mockito, and it is referenced in their FAQ:

Can I thenReturn() an inlined mock()?

Unfortunately you cannot do this:

when(m.foo()).thenReturn(mock(Foo.class));
//                         ^

The reason is that detecting unfinished stubbing wouldn't work if we allow above construct. We consider is as a 'trade off' of framework validation (see also previous FAQ entry). However you can slightly change the code to make it working:

//extract local variable and start smiling:
Foo foo = mock(Foo.class);
when(m.foo()).thenReturn(foo);

The workaround, as mentioned, is to store the desired returned value in a local variable, like you have done.

The way I understand it is that Mockito validates the usage you make of it every time you call its methods. When another method is called during an on-going stubbing process, you are breaking its validation process.
