How to use shouldFindMatchingChunk method of org.mockito.internal.invocation.InvocationsFinderTest class

Note that documentToPojo takes a Class as its second argument. any(Foo.class) returns an argument of type Foo, not of type Class<Foo>, whereas eq(WorkItemDTO.class) should return a Class<WorkItemDTO> as expected. I'd do it this way:

I am currently in the same boat as you and my reasoning was as follows: Creating a dummy JSON-response is like mocking an object and controlling it using Mockito.when. You would need to change anything in the when().thenReturn() call when you changed some inner parsing or you expect different results. This is the same with a JSON-response where calls are changed and object representations are altered.

Therefore my guess would be that this is fine. Reading various articles about testing REST API's, the general concensus is that creating dummy JSON-responses is good practice. Best practice would be to (from time to time) download the real JSON-response and insert this as the mocked response. This way you can keep your tests up-to-date with the external party, while the tests can run without internet requests.

Probably, the versions of Powermock and Mockito are not compatible. Fix that and it won't be a n issue anymore.

From an identical issue that I just ran into, I suspect that sample is a mock, and you stubbed sample.getId() elsewhere? That caused this problem in my case, anyhow.

For some reason, Mockito gets upset if one of the arguments you pass to the stub used with doThrow in this way is the result of a method you also mocked. Perhaps it's a re-entrancy check of sorts to avoid infinite loops, I don't know.

Regardless, try replacing sample.getId() with a constant value and that should solve the issue. You could consider using a constant declared in your test for both the mock and any further uses of it. You could then also check that sample.getId() was used by the method you're testing by adding another call to verify.

After consulting here http://code.google.com/p/powermock/issues/detail?id=278 , in fact Adder.add(12) above is part of setting up mock static method. It means when invoking Adder.add() with argument 12, IOException will be thrown. It is hard to understand, right? :) So it should be written as below.

PowerMockito.mockStatic(Adder.class);
PowerMockito.doThrow(new IOException()).when(Adder.class);
Adder.add(anyInt());

When involving Spring:

If you want to use Spring test framework features in your tests like for example @MockBean, then you have to use @ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class). It replaces the deprecated JUnit4 @RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)

When NOT involving Spring:

If you just want to involve Mockito and don't have to involve Spring, for example, when you just want to use the @Mock / @InjectMocks annotations, then you want to use @ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class), as it doesn't load in a bunch of unneeded Spring stuff. It replaces the deprecated JUnit4 @RunWith(MockitoJUnitRunner.class).

To answer your question:

Yes you can just use @ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class), but if you're not involving Spring test framework features in your tests, then you probably want to just use @ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class).

This feature is builtin since Mockito 1.9.5. Just use

mock(ClassToMock.class, withSettings().verboseLogging())

You are confusing a Mock with a Spy.

In a mock all methods are stubbed and return "smart return types". This means that calling any method on a mocked class will do nothing unless you specify behaviour.

In a spy the original functionality of the class is still there but you can validate method invocations in a spy and also override method behaviour.

What you want is

A quick example:

NB: You should really try to mock the dependencies for the class being tested not the class itself.

(I assume you can use Mockito though) Nothing dedicated comes to my mind but I tend to use the following strategy when it comes to situations like that:

1) In the class under test, replace the static direct call with a call to a package level method that wraps the static call itself:

public class ToBeTested{

    public void myMethodToTest(){
         ...
         String s = makeStaticWrappedCall();
         ...
    }

    String makeStaticWrappedCall(){
        return Util.staticMethodCall();
    }
}

2) Spy the class under test while testing and mock the wrapped package level method:

    ToBeTested tbTestedSpy = new ToBeTested();

    @Before
    public void init(){
        MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this);
    }

    @Test
    public void myMethodToTestTest() throws Exception{

       // Act
       tbTestedSpy.myMethodToTest();
    }
}
