How to use shouldAddVerboseLoggingListener method of org.mockito.internal.creation.DelegatingMethodTest class

Technically speaking both "mocks" and "spies" are a special kind of "test doubles".

Mockito is unfortunately making the distinction weird.

A mock in mockito is a normal mock in other mocking frameworks (allows you to stub invocations; that is, return specific values out of method calls).

A spy in mockito is a partial mock in other mocking frameworks (part of the object will be mocked and part will use real method invocations).

Use one, or more, ArgumentCaptors.

It is unclear what your types are here, but anyway. Let's suppose you have a mock which has a method doSomething() taking a Foo as an argument, then you do this:

verify(mock).doSomething(captor.capture());

final Foo argument = captor.getValue();

Also, it looks like your method returns void and you don't want it to do anything. Just write this:

doNothing().when(theMock).doSomething(any());

This code works fine. To set static field you need to pass a class to org.powermock.reflect.Whitebox.setInternalState. Please, ensure that you use PowerMock's class from the package org.powermock.reflect because Mockito has the class with the same name.

I was able to completely answer my own question.

In this example an address with the Locality of Louisville is generated while the other fields look like "address.getStreet1();".

I've finally been able to solve my problem. The key to the answer is the line

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Could not self-attach to current VM using external process

For Java 9 and more, one must add -Djdk.attach.allowAttachSelf=true as VM argument to avoid this exception. When I did, unit tests ran perfectly.

I would try any(byte[].class)

You need create real A class because you want to test it but you need to mock other classes used in A class. Also, you can find mockito documentation says that don't mock everything.

JUnit creates a new instance of test class each time it runs a new test method and runs @Before method each time it creates a new test class. You can easily test it:

    when(myMock.myMethod()).thenReturn("hello");
}

And MockitoJUnitRunner will create a new MyMock mock instance for every test method.

Changing your @PrepareForTest annotation value to MySQLDatabaseConnectionFactory.class will resolve this issue.

This annotation tells PowerMock to prepare certain classes for testing. Classes needed to be defined using this annotation are typically those that needs to be byte-code manipulated. This includes final classes, classes with final, private, static.

In this situation PowerMockito have to replace invocation to static method DriverManager.getConnection with mocked code. This is done with usage of byte-code manipulation.
