How to use MockitoInitializationException class of org.mockito.exceptions.base package

Probably, the versions of Powermock and Mockito are not compatible. Fix that and it won't be a n issue anymore.

As for me the easiest way it's just to save the link to the read object when you initialize your Spy object:

Foo realFoo = new Foo();
Foo spyFoo = Mockito.spy(realFoo);

Now you can stub it like this:

doAnswer(invocation -> realFoo.getSome() + "spyMethod").when(spyFoo).getSome();

One more way is to call invocation.callRealMethod():

doAnswer(invocation -> invocation.callRealMethod() + "spyMethod").when(spyFoo).getSome();

But in this case you may need to cast the return value as long as invocation.callRealMethod() returns Object.

It sounds like you may want to be using the .expects(1) type methods that mock frameworks usually provide.

Using mockito, if you were testing a List and wanted to verify that clear was called 3 times and add was called at least once with these parameters you do the following:

verify(mock, times(3)).clear();

The problem is on your test class Before method you are instantiating new controller

Take a look at Before method on test. I'm setting the mocked DAO on the new instance of controller that I've created and then I'm creating the MockMvc using same instance of controller.

Make sure the hamcrest jar is higher on the import order than your JUnit jar.

JUnit comes with its own org.hamcrest.Matcher class that is probably being used instead.

You can also download and use the junit-dep-4.10.jar instead which is JUnit without the hamcrest classes.

mockito also has the hamcrest classes in it as well, so you may need to move\reorder it as well

You can't do this with Mockito, but Apache Commons actually has a way to do this using one of its built in utilities. You can put this in a function in JUnit that is run after Mockito injects the rest of the mocks but before your test cases run, like this:

You could use a Mockito Answer for this.

This tells Mockito that when the persist method is called, the first argument should have its setId method invoked.

But if you do this, I don't understand what the purpose of the test would be. You'd really just be testing that the Mockito Answer mechanism works, not that the code of Article or of EntityManager works correctly.

Mockito and RETURNS_DEEP_STUBS option might be what you're looking for. What's more, mockito seems often to return sensible values by default.

Example usage from the linked documentation, for quick reference:
